Meet Rubie!

1 1
Author: Beth Rees

We welcomed a new face to Front Door this month! Rubie Barker joins the team as an Account Executive and gives us an insight into what her first month has been like and what she is looking forward to as she takes further steps into the world of PR and Marketing…

I got interested in PR and Marketing…

…during my time at the student magazine at Cardiff University. Just like FD’s fantastic Rosie Johns and Bethan Rees I read English Literature, along with History here in Cardiff. I couldn’t get enough, and I am currently in the process of finishing my masters there too!

But it was during my time on the music section of the student magazine, that I found a passion for writing and communicating. Helping the magazine bounce back after the pandemic was a real challenge, but it taught me so much. From reviving and polishing our social media accounts, to organising interviews and reviews for the return of live music, I found I wasn’t daunted by the prospect of balancing these factors with one another, it was actually quite fun.

After completing an internship last summer with Green Man Festival, one of Front Door’s amazing clients, I knew I wanted to learn more about the world of PR and digital marketing. Joining the team at Front Door and learning from the best is a pretty good way to do that, I think!

The first few weeks at Front Door…

…have been great (and sunny)! The whole team have been so welcoming and lovely, they really have made me feel at home straight away. From learning the ropes of press releases to getting stuck into excel spreadsheets, in only a month I feel like I have learnt a lot. Who better to show me the ropes than the best in the business (in my opinion of course).

I am looking forward to…

…building relationships with FD’s lovely clients. I obviously love to write, so I am keen to develop my writing skills and adapt styles to fit different sectors. Like most 20-somethings, I also have a keen interest in social media. I don’t think that any business now can ignore the importance of not just their online appearance, but their presence on various social media platforms. Getting the most out of social media isn’t always as simple as it seems, and I am keen to learn how they can.

Outside of work I spend my time…

..finishing my masters! More exciting than it sounds, to me at least. I am in the process of writing my dissertation on Brexit Literature and national identity, so that takes up most of my free time at the moment.

Of course, I need a break sometimes though, so when I am not reading or writing, I’m often walking round the beautiful countryside in South Wales. Although some weekends, I’ll be found back over the border at my parent’s home in Oxfordshire, probably out on more walks with the dog, Wilf!
